ADHOCRACY 2014 national artist hothouse

Supporting the development of new art and performance

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!
Download the full Adhocracy 2014 program HERE or view it HERE

ADHOCRACY is Vitalstatistix’s national hothouse, supporting the creative development of new experimental and interdisciplinary arts projects. Artists from around Australia join us to create, converse and critique in one space (our beautiful, heritage-listed home, Waterside) over the June Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

THIS is how it works: artists spend the long weekend in an open studio environment developing new work which can span performance, live art, sound, installation and more. They are in the early stages of the process of making and are experimenting with ideas and form. YOU can engage with the artists and their creative process through a public program of artist talks and work-in-progress showings. To keep it comfortable, there’s also a BAR (open all the time) and taco cat selling their handmade Mexican food from a 1960s caravan each evening, 5:30 to 9:30pm.

IN 2014 there are nine projects participating in Adhocracy.

1984
STEVE MAYHEW & FRIENDS, WITH SOPHIE HOPE (SA & UK)

A local iteration of a global project exploring art, politics and memory through dinner parties hosted with people politically and artistically active in the year 1984.

Future Present
ROSIE DENNIS & COLLABORATORS (NSW & SA)

An interdisciplinary project exploring climate change and economic transition, through relationships and conversations between artists and people who work in primary industry.

Heat
HISSY FIT (NSW)

A durational, choreographic performance work exploring the subversive world of aggression, violence, competition and conflict between women.

Mapping
LEISA SHELTON (VIC)

A participatory project creating a shared history of live art and contemporary performance - its key artists, practices and writing - in Australia.

Her Story #2

Catherine Fitzgerald (1996-2002)
Throughout the year, Vitalstatistix is presenting HER STORY - Sunday afternoon sessions hosted by the artistic leaders from our thirty-year history. As a full set or as a solo experience, HER STORY is a delightful, personal glimpse into Adelaide’s feminist theatre history and the story of Vitalstatistix.

Join us for the second instalment of the series with Catherine Fitzgerald (Artistic Director of Vitalstatistix from 1996 -2002).

During Catherine’s time Vitalstatistix commissioned, developed and produced over forty new projects including premiere productions, events, national and international tours, developments and play readings.  Vitalstatistix forged ahead as the National Women’s Theatre, where women writers, directors, designers, actors and arts workers made award-winning work that changed the face of theatre nationally by putting women central to the narrative/s. Rodeo Noir, The Doctor Lesson of Doctor Ruysch, Titbits!, Bull Bar Tours, Bananas, The Doris Day Dances, Feast Dinners (FISH), Winter Play Readings, Svetlana in Slingbacks, Jennifer in Security, My Vicious Angel, Whispering Demons, Spool Time, Carrying Light, Margie Fischer Live at the Lion were just some of the shows presented during this time.
Hear about the vision, bravery, audacity, and tenacity of the Vitals team during this incredible time in the company’s history. Catherine will be joined by Maggie Armstrong, Andrea O’Shea, Irene Tunis, Kerry Reid, Helen Bock, Karen Lawrence and a bevy of inspiring thespians to celebrate and reminisce the halcyon days of Vitalstatistix, National Women’s Theatre.

Bar, pies and pasties, cocktails and a great yarn, true Vitals style.

3-5pm, Sunday 4 May
Waterside, 11 Nile St, Port Adelaide
$5 entry at the door

HER STORY Session #2 is proud to be a part of About Time: South Australia's History Festival.

Hello my name is is a performance about getting to know yourself and strangers. Created by Nicola Gunn and award-winning company Sans Hotel, this startlingly original show is warm like a spring day and unexpectedly fun like a game of table tennis.

It is set in a community centre, which is just a room we call a community centre, and the audience are cast as workshop participants. Hello my name is is a beautifully chaotic, joyous and uplifting event that reminds us how to engage with and celebrate the act of living (and conga lines).

Opportunities for artists

It's not just festival time of year, it's also 'get involved at Vitals' time of year. We're sending out the call for artists to participate in Adhocracy 2014 and the Future Present residency with Rosie Dennis...

ADHOCRACY 2014

ADHOCRACY is Vitalstatistix’s national artist hothouse, supporting the creative development of new experimental and interdisciplinary projects. Artists from around Australia join us to create, converse and critique in one space (our beautiful heritage-listed home, Waterside) over the June Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

This is how it works: selected artists spend the long weekend in an open studio environment developing new work which can span live art, theatre, dance, sound, installation, media and technology, socially-engaged practice and more. Audiences engage with the artists and their creative process through a public program of artist talks and work-in-progress showings.

We are now seeking proposals from artists across Australia for this unique creative development opportunity. We will select between five and seven projects for participation.

Download the info you need to apply here.
Applications close Monday 31st March.

PORT LAND

Presented by Vitalstatistix and Format Collective in association with St Jerome's Laneway Festival

We're back from holidays, busily planning our 30th celebrations and absolutely delighted to be part of Australia's premier indie music event, St Jerome's Laneway Festival, which is taking place at Hart's Mill on 7 February.

We've partnered with the team of experimental artists, musicians and party technicians at Format Collective to transform Waterside into Port Land. Port Land brings together local bands, projection and installation art, unique lounging options (by way of old couches and cheap rugs) and further experiments in "mass karaoke" with Choral Grief.

If you're heading to Laneway, don't forget to drop into Waterside and immerse yourself in a full day of top-shelf contemporary art, music, fancy snacks, DIY knick-knacks and nautically-themed leisure.

7.50pm – 8.20pm – Old Mate
7.05pm – 7.35pm – Divine Rip
6.10pm – 6.40pm – Wireheads
5.15pm – 5.45pm – EMU
4.20pm – 4.50pm – Fair Maiden
3.25pm – 3.55pm – Bruff Superior
2.30pm – 3.00pm – Body Horror

Visual art courtesy of Katlyn Francis, Joshua Kathigitis and Adelaide ex-pats Tim Tuppence and Nick Moss.
